Consecutive interpreting

In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter listens and takes notes in a special form of shorthand while the source-language speaker is talking.

This method is often preferred for formal events like weddings, tributes or commemorative speeches, as it adds extra weight to what is being said; in addition, this method is frequently chosen for contractual negotiations as it gives the negotiating parties more time to think.

It is worth remembering that the overall speaking time is doubled in length during consecutive interpreting, as everything the source-language speaker says has to be repeated by the interpreter in the target language.
